Chapter 0661: Prison Visit
Rebirth of a Perfect Future · 第0661章 探监
Back in the dormitory, Zhao Fusheng sent a text message to Fan Baobao to report his safety, then lay down on the bed to rest.
He had been busy all day and was utterly exhausted.
The next morning, Zhao Fusheng was woken up by Tan Kaixuan, who entered the dormitory humming a tune with a beaming face.
“You do have a conscience.”
Glancing at the breakfast in the guy’s hand, Zhao Fusheng nodded with satisfaction.
“Did you think I was like you, valuing sex over friendship?” Tan Kaixuan shot Zhao Fusheng a contemptuous look, clearly still holding a grudge over Zhao Fusheng leaving him behind and running off to Beijing alone.
Zhao Fusheng chuckled, too lazy to bother with the guy’s complaints.
But come to think of it, Tan Kaixuan was really working hard these days, not only managing the KFC store but also running the chain internet cafes with Qian Dongliu. Among their peers, he was one of the more laborious ones.
“I don’t know if you value sex over friendship, but I’m sure you’ll end up with kidney deficiency sooner or later,” Zhao Fusheng said flatly, glaring at Tan Kaixuan.
Tan Kaixuan felt terrible; Zhao Fusheng’s words had essentially sentenced him to death in that regard, and he would never admit it.
“Stop tarnishing my image. You’re clearly jealous that I’m more popular than you,” Tan Kaixuan retorted.
Men, in matters like this, would never admit defeat even in death.
Zhao Fusheng shrugged noncommittally, which infuriated Tan Kaixuan even more. The more indifferent this guy was, the more frustrated he became.
“Alright, we’ll settle our issues later. What about Wang Zhen’s matter?” Jokes aside, Zhao Fusheng wouldn’t delay important business. He had come back this time to attend Wang Zhen’s trial.
Speaking of this, Tan Kaixuan sighed helplessly and gave a bitter smile.
“What, is it very troublesome?” Zhao Fusheng frowned and asked Tan Kaixuan.
Tan Kaixuan nodded: “Not very troublesome—it’s damn extremely troublesome.”
Hearing this, Zhao Fusheng’s face darkened. If even someone as optimistic as Tan Kaixuan said so, then Wang Zhen’s current situation must indeed be very serious.
“Tell me, what happened?” Zhao Fusheng said with a grim face.
“Ma Lina’s parents demanded financial compensation from Wang’s family, but Wang Zhen’s parents refused. Their reasoning was that since things had already come to this, paying compensation was meaningless. Besides, the Ma family was clearly extorting; she had deceived Wang Zhen in the first place, which led to what happened later…” Tan Kaixuan recounted the whole story and finally sighed: “I saw Wang Zhen once. He said he didn’t want his family to spend any more money on him. Whatever happens, he’ll accept the court’s verdict.”
“Bullshit!”
Zhao Fusheng blurted out in anger.
He was genuinely angry now, not because of Wang Zhen’s resignation, but because of the choice made by Wang Zhen’s parents.
In fact, Zhao Fusheng understood that Wang Zhen’s parents refused civil compensation and declared they would let the court decide, essentially because they didn’t want to spend money.
After all, Wang Zhen’s life was already ruined. No matter how light the sentence, he would definitely not be able to continue university and would have to serve time in prison. So, instead of giving the money to the Ma family as compensation, it was better to keep it for Wang Zhen’s younger brother.
“Alas, don’t be angry. There’s nothing anyone can do about this,” Tan Kaixuan said, seeing Zhao Fusheng’s reaction and knowing he had guessed what was going on.
Every family has its own troubles, and even an upright official finds it hard to settle family disputes. There was nothing to be done; it was their family matter, and even close friends and brothers like them, as bystanders, were powerless.
The key issue was that even if Zhao Fusheng and the others offered to pay compensation to Ma Lina’s family, without Wang Zhen’s parents’ consent, there was no way.
“Is there no other way?” Zhao Fusheng asked Tan Kaixuan after thinking for a moment.
Tan Kaixuan had been more involved in this matter from start to finish, while Zhao Fusheng, having been back and forth and rarely staying in Ninghai, knew less about it.
Tan Kaixuan shook his head bitterly: “The trial starts in two days. What else can be done? No matter what, Old Wang tried to kill someone, and Ma Lina almost died. Even if she was a swindler, that can’t change the nature of this incident.”
Hearing his words, Zhao Fusheng fell silent.
It was indeed true. No matter how one tried to argue, the fact remained that Wang Zhen had deliberately attempted to kill Ma Lina.
It was the same principle as doing business. No matter how much one tried to whitewash or gloss over things, the purpose of business was to make money. Any business not aimed at making money must have some other ulterior motive. And if a business’s goal was to obtain profit, then that business could not be considered just.
This was similar to the idea that dating without the intention of marriage is hooliganism.
But often, people habitually block out information that is unfavorable to them. Zhao Fusheng and Tan Kaixuan were no different; they always subconsciously avoided the fact that Wang Zhen didn’t need to resort to murder to solve this problem.
For the first time since his rebirth over a year ago, Zhao Fusheng felt that some things were truly beyond his power.
“I’ll make some calls later to find out which prison he’ll be sent to. We’ll pull some strings for him there,” Zhao Fusheng said to Tan Kaixuan after a long silence.
Tan Kaixuan was taken aback, then nodded.
He didn’t quite understand what Zhao Fusheng meant, but having been in the business world for over half a year, he understood some things.
Both of them were in a bad mood because of this matter, so they didn’t continue the conversation.
After breakfast, Zhao Fusheng and Tan Kaixuan tidied up and prepared to go to the detention center.
According to regulations, before a formal verdict, criminal suspects are not allowed to meet with family members or be visited. But in this world, if everyone followed the law, there wouldn’t be so many troubles.
Money makes the world go round, and it could certainly make the detention center turn a blind eye.
So, in the visitation room of the detention center, Zhao Fusheng and Tan Kaixuan met Wang Zhen.
After nearly two months without seeing him, the guy had actually lost weight, making him look a bit more presentable. Probably due to being in the detention center, his overall demeanor seemed much worse, but he was very happy to see Zhao Fusheng.
“You finally came to see me, huh?” Wang Zhen said to Zhao Fusheng with a smile.
Zhao Fusheng’s heart ached. Remembering the always-smiling Wang Zhen from his previous life and looking at the man in prison uniform sitting across from him behind iron bars, he suddenly felt that he might have been wrong.
